The Spirit’s Power and Purpose

There are moments in life when we realize we simply do not have enough strength on our own.

A difficult season.

A hard conversation.

A calling that feels bigger than our ability.

That is likely how the disciples felt after Jesus ascended into heaven. Jesus had given them the mission of taking the Gospel to the ends of the earth, but before they could go, He told them to wait.

Why?

Because they needed the Holy Spirit.

In John 16:7, Jesus said:

“It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you.”

Through the Holy Spirit, God would no longer simply walk beside His people, He would dwell within them.  The Spirit comforts us, guides us, gives us courage, and empowers us to live the life God has called us to live. Too many of us are exhausted because we are trying to live a supernatural life with natural strength. But Jesus never intended for us to carry the mission alone.

When the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, fearful disciples became bold witnesses. Peter, who once denied Jesus out of fear, stood before crowds and boldly proclaimed the Gospel. The difference was the Spirit of God at work within him.  And the same Spirit is still at work today.

We are not responsible for changing hearts; that is the Spirit’s work. We are simply called to be faithful. As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:6:

“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.”

Today, may we stop striving in our own strength and begin surrendering more fully to His. The same Spirit who empowered the early Church is still empowering ordinary people today.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, remind us that we are never alone. Fill us with Your strength, courage, and peace. Help us rely on Your power instead of our own and boldly live for Jesus each day. Amen.
