One Step Beyond Comfortable

"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." — Hebrews 11:6

Last Sunday, we explored the challenging words Jesus spoke to the church in Laodicea. It was a message that wasn't aimed at unbelievers, but at people who believed they were doing just fine spiritually. Their greatest problem wasn't open rebellion, it was quiet complacency.

It's possible to become so familiar with church, Scripture, and spiritual routines that we mistake activity for intimacy with Christ. We can know the songs, attend the services, volunteer on occasion, and still slowly drift into a faith that is comfortable rather than committed.

The encouraging truth is that Jesus never leaves us there.

His words to Laodicea were not meant to shame them but to restore them. He reminds them, "Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline" (Revelation 3:19). Every loving correction from God is an invitation back into deeper fellowship with Him. Even after exposing their lukewarm hearts, Jesus paints one of the most beautiful pictures in Scripture: "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock" (Revelation 3:20). The Savior wasn't walking away from them, He was pursuing them.

So how do we respond?

Sunday's challenge was intentionally simple: Do one thing every day that requires faith.

Not because earning God's love depends on it, but because faith is strengthened every time it is exercised. Muscles grow through resistance, and faith grows through obedience.

Maybe today your step of faith is forgiving someone who has hurt you. Maybe it's praying with a coworker, inviting a neighbor to church, confessing a hidden struggle, giving generously, or simply saying "yes" to something God has been nudging you toward for weeks.

Whatever it is, don't ignore the knock.

Comfort whispers, "Stay where you are."

Jesus says, "Follow Me."

One step of faith may not seem significant in the moment, but over time those daily acts of obedience shape us into people who look more and more like Christ. The world has enough people who are merely "Christian-ish." What it desperately needs are disciples whose lives demonstrate that Jesus is alive and worthy of complete surrender.

Prayer

Father, thank You for loving me enough to call me deeper. Forgive me for the places where I have settled for comfort instead of commitment. Give me ears to hear Your voice and the courage to take one step of faith today, even when it feels uncomfortable. May my life reflect a wholehearted devotion to You, and may others see Christ through my obedience. In Jesus' name, Amen.
