A Love That Gives

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:14–15 (ESV)

"Here for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for I seek not what is yours but you. For children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?"

There is a kind of love that keeps score and there is a kind of love that simply gives.

In these verses, Paul opens his heart to the church in Corinth. He isn't looking for their money, their praise, or even their appreciation. What he desires is them. His love is so genuine that he says, "I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls." What a remarkable statement. Paul is willing to pour out everything he has his time, his strength, his comfort, and even his life if it means helping others know Christ more deeply.

That kind of love isn't natural. It's the kind of love that flows from the heart of Jesus.

Jesus did not come to be served but to serve. He didn't calculate what following us would cost Him before going to the cross. He willingly spent Himself for our salvation. Paul's words echo the selfless love of Christ, reminding us that the Christian life is not about what we can get from others but about how we can faithfully give ourselves away for the glory of God.

This passage also challenges us to examine our own hearts. Do we love people because of what they can offer us? Or do we love them simply because Christ first loved us? True Christian love is willing to serve even when it isn't noticed, to give even when it isn't reciprocated, and to remain faithful even when it feels costly.

Whether you're serving your family, encouraging a friend, discipling someone in your church, or simply showing kindness to a stranger, remember that no act of love done in Christ's name is ever wasted. God sees every sacrifice, every prayer, every encouraging word, and every quiet act of faithfulness.

Today, ask the Lord to give you a heart that is willing to be "spent" for others, not out of obligation, but out of the overflowing love you've already received in Christ.

• Am I seeking what people can do for me, or am I seeking their good?
• Where is God calling me to love sacrificially this week?
• How has Jesus demonstrated this kind of selfless love in my own life?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me with a love that held nothing back. Thank You for sending Jesus, who gave Himself completely so that I could have life. Help me to love others with that same selfless heart. Teach me to give generously, serve joyfully, and care deeply for the people You have placed in my life. May my life reflect Your love, even when it is costly. Spend my life for Your glory and for the good of others. In Jesus' name, Amen.
