Peace in the Storm

Scripture: Mark 4:35–41

“That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.’ Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’ He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’ They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’”

This story captures both the humanity of the disciples and the divinity of Jesus.

  1. Storms Are Part of Life
Even when following Jesus’ command to “go to the other side,” the disciples encounter a violent storm. Obedience to God does not mean exemption from trials. In fact, storms often come when we’re walking in God’s will.

  2. Fear Can Cloud Our Faith
The disciples had seen Jesus heal and teach, yet their first reaction was panic: “Don’t you care if we drown?” Fear makes us doubt God’s presence and His concern for us. We often cry out the same way: “God, don’t You care?”

  3. Jesus Brings Peace, Not Just Calm
Jesus does not just manage the stormHe silences it with a word: “Quiet! Be still!” The real miracle isn’t only the change in the weather but the revelation of who He is. Creation obeys Him. He is Lord over wind and waves, over chaos and fear.

  4. Faith in the Storm
Jesus’ question is piercing: “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Faith doesn’t always mean we understand the storm, but it does mean we trust the One in the boat with us. Faith looks at Jesus, not at the waves.

Application

  • What storms are you currently facingEmotional, financial, relational, or spiritual?

  • Are you more focused on the size of the storm or the presence of Jesus with you?

  • How can you invite Jesus to speak His peace into your situation today?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You that You are with me in every storm. Forgive me when I let fear outweigh my faith. Teach me to trust that You care, that You are present, and that with just a word You can bring peace. Help me to rest in the truth that nothing is stronger than You. Quiet my anxious heart today. Amen.
